Four Ways to Have More Fun at Work
By Marelisa Fabrega
Having fun at work? Whoever heard of such a thing? Although humor and the workplace seem to be at odds, more and more studies are showing that having fun at work has a positive impact on the bottom line. The Great Place to Work Institute has found that employers who encourage fun at work are rewarded with higher employee loyalty and retention, a more creative and innovative workforce, higher productivity, and greater profits. Below you’ll find four ideas you can start implementing right away in order to have more fun at work. Distribute Page-a-Day Calendars Dave Hemsath and Leslie Yerkes have long advocated that a fun workplace is more productive than a boring one. In their book, “301 Ways to Have Fun at Work”, they gathered together the answers they received when they asked successful businesspeople what they do to make work more fun. Here’s one of the answers they got: Distribute page-a-day-calendars with different subjects to employees at the beginning of the year. Make sure that each calendar is different, with topics ranging from jokes, to “Jeopardy”, to tips on how to celebrate life daily. Since everyone’s calendar is different employees share the tips, jokes, or riddles that they get each day with everyone else. Go Out Together Once a Month On the last Thursday of each month go out to a restaurant or pub and celebrate all of the office birthdays that took place that month, as well as any important company goals that were reached. You can even celebrate the fact that you survived another month. The key here is camaraderie. Create a Humor Bulletin Board Create a humor bulletin board and make sure to include cartoons and jokes that poke fun at the circumstances that cause negativity or conflict in the office. You can even start a contest in which employees are encouraged to create Dilbert-like cartoons of office procedures that make little sense. Start with a fresh bulletin board each Monday but make sure to collect each week’s cartoons and create a scrapbook for the office. Turn the Coffee Room Into a Humor Room Turn the coffee room into a humor room by stocking it with toys and stand-up comedy routines on DVD or audio tape. Toys for the office can include slinkys, koosh balls, pez dispensers, hula hoops, a sand tray, wooden blocks, origami paper, and so on. You can even have a ping pong table or a foosball table. Conclusion It’s important that formal and informal activities occur regularly in the workplace that are designed to lift people’s spirits and remind them of their value to the organization. This can be achieved through the use of humor, games, celebrations, and recognition of achievements and milestones. The four examples presented above are just some of the ways in which fun and humor can be introduced into the workplace. What ideas can you come up with?
